Australia is well positioned to support the global energy transition with potential growth in the mining sector representing an economic opportunity. However, navigating the associated environmental, social, and governance (ESG) risks remains a challenge. To manage these risks, mine developers, regulators, and mining-affected communities need to be capable of identifying, analysing, and incorporating diverse types of ESG data into decision-making processes. We are interested in how mapping ESG at a national scale (providing local and regional context around mining locations), can support decision-making around new mining developments in Australia. We review spatial ESG datasets relevant to mining, including extreme events, water resources, human demographics, land use and ownership, nature conservation and governance, as well as test the influence of these factors on past mining development.
